In an Agrarian society, the economy is primarily based on agriculture and the cultivation of large fields. It is different from the hunter-gatherer society which doesn't produce food for themselves and horticultural society, which produces food in small gardens. The transition of Hunter-Gatherer society to Agrarian is called the Neolithic revolution, It occurred between 10,000 and 8000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent area of the Middle East. Other places where agrarian societies developed were Central and South America, China, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. There are many theories about the transition from Hunter-Gatherer to Agrarian social structure but there is no clear evidence for it. Agrarian societies are more complex than Hunter-Gatherer, members of agrarian societies have specialization and the surplus food produced allows for greater density of population.
