What I know is that sickle-cell anemia is when red blood cells are sickle-shaped instead of disc-shaped and can't deliver enough oxygen to the cells in the body.
Organisms usually rely on fermentation if they are small since fermentation produces little energy and it is not enough for larger organisms' highly complicated processes. In addition, it occurs usually as a last resort when nothing else works.
