The colonial experience of the American colonies was not homogeneous. The vast coastline of America allowed merchants to trade outside the control of Britishers. The distance provided by the Atlantic ocean created enough space to develop skills for self-government. Limited self-government was enjoyed by the colonies because the legislation was adopted by property holding males but under the complete authority of the Governor appointed by the British King.
