Mike's plant plant height grew by 3 in
Lauren's grew 2 1/2 times of 3 in

So, 2 1/2 times of 3 in
= 2 1/2 x 3
= 5/2 x 3
= 15/2 = 7 1/2 inches

Equate (1) and (2).

Add $3 x^{2}$ on both sides.

$-5+5x^{2}=5$

Add 5 on both sides.

$-5+5x^{2}+5=5+5$

Divide by 5 on both sides, we get

Taking square root on both sides, we get

$x=\sqrt{2}, x=-\sqrt{2}$

Substitute $x=\sqrt{2}$ in (1).
