The boundary among French and English belonging was not very much characterized, and one disputed area was the upper Ohio River valley. The French had built various fortifications in this district trying to fortify their claim on the region. English frontier powers, led by Lieutenant Colonel George Washington, endeavored to remove the French in 1754, however were dwarfed and crushed by the French.

One of these ideas was Social Darwinism which was the belief that life consists of competitive struggles in which only the fittest survive. In an 1899 interview president McKinley explained "We could not give (the Philippines) back to Spain- that would be cowardly and dishonorable." instead he argued that the United States had no choice but to "take them all, and educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize...them.".
