What organisms do to food in order to use the nutrients in it is that, they simply eat it. When eating, this food is being broken down through physical and chemical processes. Physical process, such as the chewing the food, and later on, this food will undergo the chemical process inside the body extracting the nutrients from it for the body's use for better functioning.
