Answer:

To begin with, one immediate effect of the riot was the loss of lives caused by both the hurling of the bomb and the indiscriminate open fire by the police in response. It is estimated that approximately eleven people died including seven policemen and an unconfirmed number of civilians.

Another immediate effect was the arrest of eight labor movement radical leaders who were arraigned and tried in court. Eventually, seven of them were slapped with capital punishment and one handed a 15 year jail term.

Also, the Haymarket riot sparked a deep sense of xenophobia throughout the country. Chicago newspapers incited the public against the anarchists by publishing the police version of the Haymarket incident and stirring sympathy for them.

  • The Haymarket Affair also called the Haymarket Massacre began as a peaceful rally that aimed to support workers that were striking for 8 hour working day. The problem was that the police came and killed one person and injured several others. This caused revolt, one person threw a bomb that killed seven police officers. The aftermath was that 8 people were convicted of conspiracy and seven were sentenced to death and other to 15 years in prison.
  • The Homestead Strike or Homestead was a strike held by the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers against the Carnegie Steel. The Association was able to gain a good wage for workers and good work rules. But Carnegie wanted to low the costs of production by breaking the union by stepping up production demands and when the Association refused to accept them they locked workers out of the plant. Thousand of strikers reunited and some of them were armed, they had a battle and later surrendered and nine strikers and seven Pinkertons were killed some were injured. The aftermath was that this strike inspired others and many workers.
  • The Pullman Strike was a strike that happened nationwide and was led by railroad workers, a quarter-million workers were on strike and the strike affected the nation so much that it shut down the railroads and most of the American business. The reason for the strike was that the companies cut wages. Because of that, the government sent federal troops to crush the strike, 26 civilians were killed, others were arrested. The aftermath was that this strike was a turning point for Us labor law and put a milestone on the use of federal courts to curtail union activity in America.

How did germany increase its power after unifying in 1871
Cloud [144]

Answer:

How did German Confederation (a loose league of 39 sovereign states) increase it's power after unifying in 1871?

Germany barely had time to breathe before the reality of its newly found status sunk in. The German Constitution, which united the states, was formulated and ratified by 1872; but economic reforms would take longer to implement, while military matters were not even discussed until the late 1870s. The other European powers that had been eyeing potential opportunities for themselves since Prussia’s earlier wars with Austria were watching these developments carefully. They feared Germany would establish itself as the main power not only on the continent but over all of Europe too. Part of this fear was also due to the fact that Germany’s rapid growth had created a population of around 60 million, thus earning it the title ‘the New Prussia’.

Germany’s biggest issue in 1871 was allied with the issue of Austria-Hungary, France and Russia. The unification resulted in France being surrounded by at least one German state on each border. This meant that if war were to break out, France would have to fight her enemy on multiple fronts. Bismarck knew that France would desire revenge for Germany defeating them in the Franco-Prussian War, so he wanted to avoid war in the short term at all costs
