I would the say that she works in ecology which deals at least in part with the interaction between plants and the soil which they depend on to live ie the relationship between different species of trees like pine trees which like sandy and well-drained soil and say black spruces which like to live in muskegs.
Reasons
1) the lack of an effective central government means there is nowhere for the somali people to turn for aid
2) the country dry climate makes it nearly impossible to grow enough food to feed all of the somali people
3) constant clan warfare deprive the somali people of the goods and services they need to acquire the basic necessities for life
