A person with a genotype of HbSS has sickle cell disease. A person with a genotype of HbAS allele carries the sickle cell trait.

A person with a genotype of HbAA does not have sickle cell disease and does not carry the trait. The Punnett square shows the genotype of two people carrying the sickle cell trait. What are the chances that their offspring will have sickle cell anemia?

Answer:

There is a 25% chance that the offspring will have sickle cell anemia (SS)

Explanation:

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease, where red blood cells can take the shape of a crescent (sickle), and this change allows the red blood cells to be more easily destroyed, causing anemia. Sickle cell anemia is caused by defective hemoglobin (Hb), which is the oxygen carrying protein in blood cells. Hemoglobin is made up of four peptide chains, each bound to a heme group. Different hemoglobins have different combinations of these chains. Hemoglobin A (HbA) is the primary hemoglobin affected in sickle cell, because their beta-globin chains end up misshapen because of a genetic mutation in the beta-globin gene. Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal recessive disease, so there needs to be a mutation in both copies of the beta-globin gene in order to get the disease. If a person has just one copy of the mutated gene and the other copy is normal for the gene, then they are a sickle cell carrier.

So first of all, this looks like a dihybrid cross, but it is not because we are dealing with one pair of alleles (gene that causes sickle cell), so we will actually be doing a monohybrid cross.

So let’s go through the alleles step by step:

Hb = hemoglobin (constant, all red blood cells have hemoglobin, we are looking at the mutation in the beta globin gene of the hemoglobin which will be the allele we focus on)

SS = sickle cell (mutated beta globin gene (S) x 2)

AA = normal beta globin gene (A) x 2 (no sickle cell)

AS = carrier (one sickle cell gene + one normal gene)

HbAS x HbAS

Carrier x carrier

PARENTS A S

   A AA AS

  S AS SS

25% chance that the offspring will have a normal (does not have sickle cell anemia) genotype (AA)

50 % chance that the offspring will be carriers (AS)

25% chance that the offspring will have sickle cell anemia (SS)

The body determines whether certain genes should be expressed or not. Sometimes genes are only turned on once or twice in a life
zmey [24]

The gene which is produced once or twice in a lifetime is the milk producing hormone after childbirth. This is because it is produced only after the birth of the child. The growth of the mammary glands takes place during pregnancy. The breast continue to increase in size after giving birth to a child. After delivery only copious milk is produced which is generally done with the help of milk hormone. During pregnancy the secretion of the milk is inhibited by the estrogen and progesterone which circulates in the blood stream which in turn inhibits the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland thus making the mammary glands unresponsive. Where as insulin is a hormone which helps the body to utilise the sugar or glucose from different sources like carbohydrates that we get while we eat food and adrenaline is secreted when we are scared or when we feel that we are in danger. Therefore, milk producing hormone is the gene that are turned once or twice in a lifetime.

Write a paragraph that describes where DNA is found inside cells and how it is packaged. If desired, add a drawing to support yo
ryzh [129]

Answer:

DNA is tightly packed up to fit in the nucleus of every cell. As shown in the animation, a DNA molecule wraps around histone proteins to form tight loops called nucleosomes. These nucleosomes coil and stack together to form fibers called chromatin. Chromatin, in turn, loops and folds with the help of additional proteins to form chromosomes. Condensing DNA into chromosomes prevents DNA tangling and damage during cell division.

Your New Year's resolution is to drastically reduce the amount of cholesterol in your diet by eating less meat and more fruits a
grin007 [14]

After a few months of eating less meat and more fruits and vegetable, the liver will respond by producing more cholesterol.

What is body homeostasis?

The term body homeostasis makes reference to the internal equilibrium (homeostasis) of the body.

Body homeostasis may involve the production of certain substances when they are not consumed from the diet.

In this case, it is possible to increase cholesterol levels by having certain healthy habits (food habits).
