Glittering jewelry always catches my eye. If I am shopping and I spot a sparkling necklace, I check to see how much it costs. By saving my allowance, I can often buy new costume jewelry. Once I even found a beautiful engraved bracelet at a yard sale. I was thrilled!

“______” is a present participle.

“______” functions as a verb, not as a present participle.

In the passage, the word engraved is an example of a _____.

Answer:

“Sparkling” is a present participle.

“Shopping” functions as a verb, not as a present participle.

In the passage, the word engraved is an example of a past participle.

Explanation:

The present participle is often used to talk of an active action. It´s formed by adding -ing to the infinitive of the verb. In this case, it´s used as an adjective, to describe a necklace as being shiny ("Sparkling")

However, the word "shopping", although it has the same structure described before (-ing added to the infinitive) is being used as a verb to express an example ("If I am shopping"), not as a present participle.

The word "engraved" is a past participle, also used as an adjective.
