Even though many sport events have low ratings, television companies want to broadcast them because they fill "dead time" on weekends and because they attract an audience that sponsors want to reach.

Explanation:

Every show have set of sponsors and they try to reach their audience through the TV show. Sponsor pays a pre-decided set of the amount to promote their brand on the television. By the way of sponsorship sponsors create a positive image in the mind of the customers.

In spite of being a lower rated sports show, they tend to run the show because they want their sponsors to reach their target audience. Another reason is they can cover economic profit from running this show.
