The Gettysburg Address
"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war.
We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.
It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth."

From the Chicago Times "Readers will not have failed to observe the exceeding bad taste which characterized the remarks of the President ... The cheek of every American must tingle with shame as he reads the silly, flat, and dish-watery utterances of the man who has to be pointed out to intelligent foreigners as the President of the United States."

Write an essay of at least two to three paragraphs analyzing this newspaper remark from the Chicago Times. Use specific quotations from the Gettysburg Address to support or refute the newspaper's claim.

I won't write the entire essay for you (so there won't be plagiarism), but I can give you some ideas and quote ideas.

The newspaper is saying that the man is silly.

You could include the quote
"...in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hollow this ground. ...."

EDIT: A good quote you could use for your conclusion is

"...from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people..."

 A wrong remark

The Chicago has accused President Lincon´s remark as with..".exceeding bad taste  " something which really is ridiculous.It is not bad taste to say that .."All men are created equal.."The color of the skin is irrelevant as it is the kind of job a person has or the education received.Living in the same nation, and that nation being The United Statess of America, means all the inhabitants have equal rights.

Utterances coming from this speech are not at all silly, flat let alone dish watery.The President describes America as a country who has won many battles by the hands of men who dedicated their lifes to make it great..."..They gave their last full measure of devotion..".."These dead shall not have died in vain..."How can a message with such passion for the commitment of our forefathers be taken as flat or felt  silly?It is outrageous that accusations like this come from a newspaper which people take so seriously.
