A virus is an organism that is incapable of replicating or reproducing on its own, hence, it relies on a living host cell to replicate Its genetic material and reproduce into virions. The process of a virus using its host cell to replicate is termed infection cycle of the virus because it infects Its host. This infection cycle is the replication cycle of that particular virus.
When the virus infects Its host, it takes over the host and uses the transcriptional, translational, replicational ability of its host cell to reproduce into virions. All viruses infect a specific host but a common example of virus which infects bacteria is the BACTERIOPHAGE. The bacteriophage (virus) attaches to the bacteria cell membrane, enters the cell, incorporates its own genetic material into the bacteria's genome and uses its replicational ability to produce new viral cells called virions.
