Bipolar disorder is a long-term mental illness that can affect the lives of everyday people and their families. Bipolar disorder is seen by intermittent episodes of mania and depression. Symptoms of mania include increased energy, restlessness, and feelings of euphoria. Meanwhile, states of mania are often characterized by impulsivity, recklessness, social intrusiveness, and diminished need for sleep. All of these can lead to patients inflicting harm on themselves and sometimes others.
