Explanation:

When a solution has pH less than 7 then it is known as an acidic solution. In an acidic solution there are more number of hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions.

Mathematically,       pH = -[log]\frac{1}{[H^{+}}]}[/tex]

where               [H^{+}] = concentration of hydrogen ions

Whereas when a solution has pH more than 7 then it is known as a basic solution. In a basic solution there are more number of hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions.

Hence, we can conclude that the presence of an acid in a water solution affect the pH of the solution as it raises the pH.
