The longer the civil War lasted the more Americans would die. it would use up their resources and they were focusing all efforts on the military. citizens we're suffering. stuff was in damaged from the battles.
also... why wouldn't he want to end it quickly? the faster he ends it less people will diem. the thing about civil War is, we were fighting ourselves. just think about it.
