Despite several hours of rest Thomas still feels exhausted. He spends most of the day on a bench in the Deadheads. The joy of his escape has quickly evaporated, leaving only pain and the thoughts of his miserable life in the Glade.  For the first time, Thomas feels a real need for revenge. But despair quickly takes him again. If Newt and the others had been trying to find a way out for two years, what chance did he have? The Maze becomes a metaphor for the dystopian world he lives in. He ponders how could anyone be so evil to this to children?
