The principle of self-government was initiated by the people in the mayflower ships because they do not want to fully controlled by the another government. They elected their own government body that can pass the rules and legislation in their territory. The english bill of rights state the basic civil rights that cannot be crossed/violated by the government in any circumstances. It automatically given to all citizens as soon as they are born in the country. The united states' bill of rights that we have is inspired by this document.

This mean that they can even execute people without proper cause and all of the monarch's wrong doing would be punishable by law. The creation of magna charta highlight how the powers of the monarch mean nothing if the citizens unite and choose to oppose them.
