This could also be considered as blasphemy against the church. in other words because the theory of evolution rivaled those of the church, therefore church was against the teaching of it. this is because they didn't want people to begin questioning the legitimacy of the church or their teachings.

This move, in terms of foreign relations, threw the European allies, especially France and Britain, into confusion.
