One of the clearest examples of how Jem grows up in Part 1 is the way he strives to be able to interact with Boo Radley. Jem overcomes the fear he has for this character (due to the stories he has heard around town) and tries to knock his front door. He also leaves notes for him, and organizes a night expedition.

A second example is the way his attitude toward Atticus changes. While at the beginning of the story he feels relatively comfortable playing around with Atticus's rules, he soon shows concern over disappointing him. His attitude towards his father shows increased maturity and a deeper understanding of why his father behaves the way he does.
