Answer: Roosevelt was intent on building a canal across Panama that would shorten that trip by around 5000 miles.

OR

Roosevelt wanted to build a canal across Panama that would shorten the trip by 5000 miles.

OR-- assuming the numbers in the prompt are incorrect-- and should have referred to lines 4 and 5:

He wanted to build a canal that would benefit communication, trade and defense.

Explanation: The relative pronoun, that, relates canal in the main clause and replaces the canal in the second sentence so it can be inserted into the first sentence.

It may seem confusing, but the sentences have to be reworked a bit more in this example-- by changing the verb forms along with creating the relative clause.

The sentences in lines 4 and 5 are much easier to combine using that because the repeated canal is so close to the sentences that introduces the idea of building the canal.

The story “Cruel Tribute” is broken into four parts:
PIT_PIT [208]

Answer:

Sequencing the events this way increases the level of suspense.

Explanation:

The short story "Cruel Tribute" by James Baldwin is a mythological tale of a "tribute" ordered by the king of Crete, a minotaur, Theseus, and Ariadne. The story follows how Theseus overcame the monster Minotaur and overcame the obstacle of the Labyrinth.

In ordering the short story based on the four parts starting from the treaty, the ordering of the tribute, entry of the princess, and finally the labyrinth helped maintain the suspense of the whole story. It increases the suspense and helped keep the readers so engrossed in the story.

Thus, the correct answer is the fourth option.

The passage is not given so I cannot exactly tell but judging on the choices my best guess is C. It shows the Young’s are poor because things like the letter-box and doorbell are rundown, broken.
