An equation is a mathematical statement consisting of two sides and an equal sign equating those two sides. Each side comprises an <em>expression</em>. An equation is a statement because it claims the two expression equal. This may be true, or false, or true for only certain values of variable appearing in the expression. However, an equation is distinctly different from a simple expression.
