Dictionaries can bring different sorts of information regarding each word, but one thing that is unanimus is the existence of a definition. Mostly people use dictionaries to find the definition, the actual meaning of the word.

Regarding the type of information presented in a typical entry, some things are usually found in a monolingual dictionary in spite of definition information (on the basis of the structure in the Longman Contemporary English Dictionary (LDOCE):

1.  Spelling: the headword is presented in normal spelling, written in bold. Headwords are sorted out alphabetically in a dictionary.

2.  Frequency information: a symbol that specifies how repeatedly the word is in spoken and written language. In LDOCE, symbols are boxes with 'W' (for written) or 'S' (for spoken) along with a number.

3.  Pronunciations: phonetic characters, presented in slashes / / or parentheses ( ) brackets, it explains the pronunciation of the word (the word pronunciation is transcribed on the basis of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

4.  Word classes: word classes (part-of-speech) of words and other information of grammar are presented on the basis of conventional abbreviations, such as ‘v’ for Verb and ‘n’ for nouns.

5.  Sense: when a word has more than one meaning or sense, then different senses are totaled. When the group of senses or senses are in a different class of words, this is detailed. For each distinct meaning, the definition is presented when at the same time operates as an explanation of its meaning.

6. Collocation, the use of phrases and words’ syntactic operations: examples are presented of how keywords can be jointly beneficial in other words to make use of idiomatic language.
