The Whig Party was formed in 1834 as an opposition party to the policies of President Andrew Jackson, and his war with the Second National Bank. The Whig Party ended in 1856 because of the expansion of slavery and the Compromise of 1850 (five bills that settled territorial and slavery disputes after the Mexican-American War) divided the party.
Northern Whigs opposed to the expansion of slavery, and later became the Republican Party, while Southern Whigs were in favor of the expansion of slavery and became the American Party
