This comes from the short story “<em><u>Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street”</u></em> written by <u>Herman Melville. </u>It is the story of a lawyer who employs a very strange man , Bartleby, as a scrivener. He relates how he would ask Bartleby to do some work but he would just refuse to do it, or stand by the window and say nothing.

Question: In the bolded section, how does the addition of "not a word" change the impact of this introductory clause?
