After deportation trains arrived at the killing centers, guards ordered the deportees to get out and form a line. The victims then went through a selection process. Men were separated from women and children. A Nazi, usually an SS physician, looked quickly at each person to decide if he or she was healthy and strong enough for forced labor. This SS officer then pointed to the left or the right; victims did not know that individuals were being selected to live or die. Babies and young children, pregnant women, the elderly, the handicapped, and the sick had little chance of surviving this first selection.
In virtue of the World War Adjusted Compensation Act, U.S. World War I veterans were granted certificates, or bonuses, for their service in the Armed Forces during the Great War to be redeemed in 1945. Due to the onset of the Depression, in 1932, a large group of veterans out of jobs and desperate to get some money to support their families, marched to Washington D.C. where they camped in order to request the government to honor the bonuses well ahead of their redemption date. The government refused and had U.S. Army units remove the demonstrators by the force of arms, including six tanks, resulting in two World War I veterans killed and over a thousand injured. Four years later the Congress ordered the payment of the certificates nine years before their redemption date.
It can be said that society wants to punish the guilty;however, they are cautious when doing so. Society is afraid that the justice system is placing an innocent person behind bars for every ten people that are being set free. Our judicial system was put in place to protect the innocent and put the guilty behind bars; however, this is not so. We have a corrupt society that contradicts itself from the lowest court system to the highest government powers of Congress. When one political power takes control, it's like a gang or "mafia" take over with the people suffering without a voice.
