She means that there were a number of different aspects that don't usually belong together and don't even fit. That is that America is formed by all discordant pieces.However they fit at the end and managed to build a society that works. This can be compared to a quilt consisting of several patches that are disjunctive, even thought together they create a great quilt. The example of tje quilt supports her claim.
