In 1818 Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley took the next major step in the evolution of science fiction when she published Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus. Champions of Shelley as the “mother of science fiction” emphasize her innovative fictional scheme. Abandoning the occult folderol of the conventional Gothic novel, she made her protagonist a practicing “scientist”—though the term scientist was not actually coined until 1834—and gave him an interest in galvanic electricity and vivisection, two of the advanced technologies of the early 1800s. Even though reanimated corpses remain fantastic today, Shelley gave her story an air of scientific plausibility. This masterly manipulation of her readers established a powerful new approach to creating thrilling sensations of wonder and fear. Frankenstein has remained in print since its first publication, and it has been adapted for film repeatedly since the first silent version in 1910. Frankenstein’s monster likewise remained a potent metaphor at the turn of the 21st century, when opponents of genetically engineered food coined the term Frankenfood to express their concern over the unknown effects of the human manipulation of foodstuffs.

Another significant 19th-century forerunner was Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote many works loosely classifiable as science fiction. The Balloon Hoax of 1844, originally published in the New York Sun, is but one example of Poe’s ability to provide meticulous technical descriptions intended to mislead and impress the gullible.

Answer:

Economic depression

Explanation:

An economic depression is characterized by an aggravated state of recession, that is, a long period of mass unemployment, bankruptcy of companies, low levels of production and investments, etc., always leading to negative consequences for a country's economy.

Based on this, we can conclude that the best for a science fiction story written by a British author in 1898 is economic depression. By that time, England began to lose its power over other countries. This loss of power has led to a decrease in the country's economic power. For this reason, the author could draw inspiration from this weakening economy and write about a society that was facing economic depression.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 had a major influence on the post world war 1 by what ?
Elodia [21]

The influenza pandemic of 1918 was an influenza epidemic of unusual severity. Unlike other epidemics of influenza that affect children and elders, many of its victims were young and healthy adults, and animals, including dogs and cats. It is considered the most devastating pandemic in human history, because in only one year it killed between 40 and 100 million people.

After registering the first cases in Europe, apparently in France, the influenza passed to Spain, a neutral country in the war and that did not censure the publication of reports on the disease and its consequences, hence, despite being an international problem, it was given this name because it seemed in the information of the time that it was the only country affected.

Although the First World War did not cause the influenza, the proximity of the barracks and the massive movements of troops helped its expansion. The researchers believe that the soldiers' immune systems were weakened by the strain of combat and chemical attacks, increasing the chances of contracting the disease.

A factor in the transmission of the disease was the amount of travel of the combatants. The modernization of transport systems made it possible for mariners to spread the pandemic more rapidly over a wider range of communities.

How should voters prepare for election? Write a single paragraph explaining your answer
baherus [9]

Voters should not listen to social media or what their best friend says about the candidates. They should also leave out feelings and look at the facts and statistics about each candidate, see which views you support. Which candidate supports your views and will work for you? Instead of listening to what someone else says, research yourself. If you don't do the research and you vote for someone based on others opinions, you have failed yourself.
