The tragedy which causes the conflict for Antigone is the death of her brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, during a battle for supremacy in Thebes. ANtigone is determined to give Polyneices a decent burial, seeing this as right and proper in the eyes of god, even though the new king, Creon, has expressly forbidden the action.
