It would not stretch matters to say that the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 (P.L. 59-384, 34 Stat. 768), also known as the Wiley Act, stands as the most consequential regulatory statute in the history of the United States. The act not only gave unprecedented new regulatory powers to the federal government, it also empowered a bureau that evolved into today's Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The legacy of the 1906 act includes federal regulatory authority over one-quarter of gross domestic product, and includes market gatekeeping power over human and animal drugs, foods and preservatives, medical devices, biologics and vaccines. Other statutes (such as the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, the Sherman and Clayton antitrust laws, and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914) have received more study, but the Pure Food and Drug Act has had the longest-lasting and most widespread economic, political, and institutional impact.

Which mandate shown in the source would be the most problematic for the British in the mid 20th century?
Mazyrski [523]

Answer: The British Mandate over PALESTINE

Explanation/context:

The mandate system authorized a member nation of the League of Nations to govern a former German or Turkish colonial area after the conclusion of World War I.

There were mandate territories for former German territories in Africa and Asia, as well for former Ottoman territories in the Middle East.

The former Turkish provinces of Syria, Iraq and Palestine in the Middle East were divided into a French mandate territory and British mandate territory. The British mandate rule over Palestine proved very problematic for the British to govern, as tension grew between local Arab populations and a strong influx of Jewish immigrants trying to reestablish themselves in the region. The British Mandate period in Palestine has much to do with the history of the development of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

mario62 [17]
