Body cells perform mitosis in which they copy there chromosome prior to division, then dividing once, keeping there number of chromosomes, these are referred to as diploid cells. Sex cells perform meiosis where they double there chromosomes then divide twice, creating 4 cells, each containing half the chromosomes. These are referred to as haploid cells.
