The First Amendment Free Excercise Claus gives the people the right to excercise their beliefs freedomly, with no impediments on the part of the government.

The Warren Court ruled that the freedom of worship clause means that governments must have a compelling reason before they can pass a law that overwhelms the practice of religion excessively. Subsequent rulings departed from this criterion, allowed government events that interfere with religion as long as they are neutral.
