What is the purpose of the opening chorus in Romeo and Juliet?

English
1 answer:
hoa [83]3 years ago

This opening speech by the Chorus serves as an introduction to Romeo and Juliet. We are provided with information about where the play takes place, and given some background information about its principal characters.

The obvious function of the Prologue as introduction to the Verona of Romeo and Juliet can obscure its deeper, more important function. The Prologue does not merely set the scene of Romeo and Juliet, it tells the audience exactly what is going to happen in the play. The Prologue refers to an ill-fated couple with its use of the word “star-crossed,” which means, literally, against the stars. Stars were thought to control people’s destinies. But the Prologue itself creates this sense of fate by providing the audience with the knowledge that Romeo and Juliet will die even before the play has begun. The audience therefore watches the play with the expectation that it must fulfill the terms set in the Prologue. The structure of the play itself is the fate from which Romeo and Juliet cannot escape.

The Knights of the Round Table express their solidarity by wearing a green girdle as Gawain does. Why does Gawain wear the green
Serjik [45]
Gawain wears the green girdle as a token of his failure for not keeping his promise. He was supposed to give the host that he would give him whatever he gained that day, but he didn't give him the green girdle for fear that he would die. After being called out because of that, Gawain swears to wear the green sash for the rest of his life, and the Knights of the Round Table start wearing it as well after absolving him of blame.

KIM [24]

Answer:

B)It shows his wife is still not happy.

Explanation:

From the passage given, the fisherman is begging the "man of the sea" to listen to his pleas because his wife has sent him to "beg a boon of thee".

From the fairytale of <em>The Fisherman and his wife</em>, the fisherman catches a fish which claims to be an enchanted prince and he returns it to the sea but his wife is not happy when she hears it and asks him to go back so that he will grant him a wish and the fisherman reluctantly does this but his wife is not satisfied and she keeps sending him again and again and again, which the fisherman is not happy doing, but he keeps going just to make his wife happy.
