The overtaking of Japan's government by military leaders favored an aggressive expansionary policy that would result in the control of much of the territory of Southeast Asia by the empire of Japan. The event that signaled the start of this period was the invasion of the Chinese region of Manchuria in 1937 and it would end with Japan's surrender to the Allies during the Second World War in August of 1945.
