<span>He believed that the war was fought to add more slave states to the United States. He believed that by acquiring the Mexican territory, the Democratic party would obtain additional slave state that strengthen their position in the government. Since Henry David Thoreau consider himself as an abolitionist, he did not support the purpose of this Mexican-American war. </span>
