In the early 1900s progressive era reformers sought to increase citizen participation in government by supporting the the process of electing the US senators directly. It was during this progressive era period that huge amount of social and political reforms took place across the United States of America. The actual or rather the reason behind this movement was the eradication of corruption in the ruling government. The target of this movement were mainly the corrupt political leaders that were misusing the power given to them.
