Maya Angelou was an African-American poet and Civil's Right activist. Her memoir was one of the best-selling nonfiction by a black woman.

She is important because she has over 36 award-winning books and over 50 honorary titles. She wrote about controversial things, like race relationships in America. This even caused some schools to ban her books.<span />

Maya Angelou was born in 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was active in the civil rights movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. But she published I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1969.
