Jack London went on the Yukon goldrush himself and used the vivid experiences of the Canadian North to drive home his points about the harshness of winter up there on the top of the world and not being able to take anything for granted. The protaganist was too confident as he thought he could walk the 9 hours with his dog to a mining camp where his friends were with a warm fire etc. Most likely he was a cheechako or green traveller who came from much warmer climes like say California and did not have a healthy respect for the unforgiving winter conditions.
