The answer is D because the whole point of a metaphor is to compare things in a unique way and it makes people really think.

It's probably D
because metaphors are actually quite difficult to understand in most cases so it's not A and B just seems like another stylistic device and C idk

I read this story about 2 weeks ago, but from what I recall, there's a whole paragraph in the beginning of the excerpt describing the miner's condition when they stepped off the boat.
