This abundance of labor was taken advantage of by the owners of the factories (the industrial capitalists), who hired the workers for miserable wages. Thus, the situation of these factory workers was really appalling. Added to this lived crammed, in some cases several families in a single room. These communal dwellings were always around the big factories.
