Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962), was a milestone United States Supreme Court case that confirmed that it is unlawful for state authorities to create an official school supplication and require its recitation in government funded schools.
The court chose that administration coordinated supplication in government funded schools was an unlawful infringement of the Establishment Clause. This was chosen in a vote of 6-1, on the grounds that before the choice could be declared, Justice Felix Frankfurter endured a cerebral stroke that constrained him to resign, and Justice Byron White took no part for the situation.
