After the British Empire decided that it is time to retreat from India, the independence of the country did not went without problems, as it was separated into three countries, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Pakistan was a territory that India was forced to give up mainly because of the religious nationalism. Even though by definition, nationalism and religion are different things, in certain situations, the people feel the religion as a national identity, and that was the case with the Muslim population in Pakistan, so one way or another it managed to gain independence on that basis.
