I think the answer is Innocence but I am super sorry if that isn't the right answer
I merely read a summary of the story.
I think Sal's mom suffer from depression. Her sadness came about after she had a stillborn baby and had to undergo hysterectomy.
I also think that she harbors negative feelings towards Sal because of Sal's accident. The accident resulted to the death of Sal's sibling and hysterectomy which lead to the death of Chanhassen's dream of having many children.
There are also instances when it was mentioned in the summary that Chanhassen left to find herself. She wanted to know herself before she became a wife and a mother. I think that is the reason why she will not be returning with Sal and her father.
