Sensory adaptation is a phenomenon that occurs when sensory receptors are exposed to stimuli for a prolonged period. Depending on the stimulus, receptors may increase or decrease their ability to respond and develop increased or decreased sensitivity to the stimulus. This can happen with all five of our basic senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. An example of this can be seen in the phrase "Dan's mother had to yell his name a dozen times before he heard her." that is, Dan's hearing was stimulated when he was subjected to a stimulus (his mother called his name) for a long time.
