distributive property is when you take the number on the outside of the parenthesis and you, well, distribute it to the inside numbers.
so
35(5 + 7)
you have to do 35 * 5 and 35 * 7
its 175 and 245, and then you add those to get 420
same with 12
12 * 6 and 12 * 5
that's 72 and 60
72 - 60 = 12
you minus cause in the parenthesis it's a minus symbol in this case
