It was the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11th that caused the establishment of the United States department of homeland security, whose main objective is protect the US from terrorist attacks.
Franklin Roosevelt set up the lend-lease program in 1941 to
help Britain fight against Germany and the Axis Powers. The United States was
officially uninvolved in the war at the time but this was a method of offering
aid indirectly to the Allied nations.
Congress wanted to punish the South, but Lincoln wanted to make the reconciliation as easy as possible.
