The United States suffered many costly defeats at the hands of British, Canadian and Native American troops over the course of the War of 1812, including the capture and burning of the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., in August 1814.

Answer:

a. the end of the war of 1812 represents the emergence of american true identity because this is when great britain attacked the us for our independence, and we protect our nation from another invasion. this was big because great britain was known as a world power and we were able to defeat them twice. this was also a big deal for the u.s. because we were a fresh and new nation, learning how to work together. this shows the world that we can protect ourselves.

b. option a is not a good choice, because we were still under british rule. we still hadn't gained our independence. option c is a better option that a because it demonstrates that the new nation of the united states are beginning to rise to world power. it showed what america would become, even as we were challenged.

Leviafan [203]

Answer:

the Supreme Court ruled that Congress could not outlaw slavery anywhere in the United States.

Explanation:

In the Dred Scott v. Stanford case 1847, Dred Scott sued for freedom citing that as far as he has visited two free states he is automatically a free individual and cannot be re-enslaved. However he lost the case. In 1854, the case was brought to United States Supreme Court and Chief Justice Roger Taney rules against him. In his ruling, he said that all people of African descent, free or slave, were not United States citizens and therefore had no right to sue in federal court. he also wrote that the Fifth Amendment protected slave owner rights because slaves were their legal property.

What did the Clean Water Act do for American cities? They forced cities to clean up their act and their water in different ways?
a_sh-v [17]

Answer:

The 1972 amendments:

  • Established the basic structure for regulating pollutant discharges into the waters of the United States.
  • Gave EPA the authority to implement pollution control programs such as setting wastewater standards for industry.
  • Maintained existing requirements to set water quality standards for all contaminants in surface waters.
  • Made it unlawful for any person to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained under its provisions.
  • Funded the construction of sewage treatment plants under the construction grants program.
  • Recognized the need for planning to address the critical problems posed by nonpoint source pollution.

Subsequent amendments modified some of the earlier CWA provisions. Revisions in 1981 streamlined the municipal construction grants process, improving the capabilities of treatment plants built under the program. Changes in 1987 phased out the construction grants program, replacing it with the State Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund, more commonly known as the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. This new funding strategy addressed water quality needs by building on EPA-state partnerships.

Over the years, many other laws have changed parts of the Clean Water Act. Title I of the Great Lakes Critical Programs Act of 1990, for example, put into place parts of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1978, signed by the U.S. and Canada, where the two nations agreed to reduce certain toxic pollutants in the Great Lakes. That law required EPA to establish water quality criteria for the Great Lakes addressing 29 toxic pollutants with maximum levels that are safe for humans, wildlife, and aquatic life. It also required EPA to help the States implement the criteria on a specific schedule.

Explain each Buddhist influence by clearly identifying the Buddhist belief or practice and how it influenced pop culture
hichkok12 [17]

Answer:

After a long period of commercial intercourse, there appear among the crowd of barbarians both good persons and

bad, unevenly. Consequently there are those who smuggle opium to seduce the Chinese people and so cause the

spread of the poison to all provinces. Such persons who only care to profit themselves, and disregard their harm to

others, are not tolerated by the laws of heaven and are unanimously hated by human beings. His Majesty the

Emperor, upon hearing of this, is in a towering rage. He has sent me, his commissioner, to come to Kwangtung, and

to investigate and settle this matter.

All those people in China who sell opium or smoke opium should

receive the death penalty. We have however received a specially

extended favor from his Majesty the Emperor, who considers that

for those who voluntarily surrender can be excused them from

punishment. But as for those who again violate the opium

prohibition, it is difficult for the law to pardon them repeatedly.

Having established new regulations, we presume that the ruler of

your honorable country, who takes delight in our culture and

whose disposition is inclined towards us, must be able to instruct

the various barbarians to observe the law with care. It is only

necessary to explain to them the advantages and disadvantages

and then they will know that the legal code of the Celestial Court

must be absolutely obeyed with awe.

We find that your country is sixty or seventy thousand li [3 li

equals one mile] from China. Yet there are barbarian ships that

strive to come here for trade for the purpose of making a great

profit. The wealth of China is used to profit the barbarians. That

is to say, the great profit made by barbarians is all taken from the

rightful share of China. By what right do they then in return use

the poisonous drug to injure the Chinese people? Even though

the barbarians may not necessarily intend to do us harm, yet in

coveting profit to an extreme, they have no regard for injuring

others.

Let us ask, where is your conscience? I have heard that the smoking of opium is very strictly forbidden by your

country; that is because the harm caused by opium is clearly understood. In the London metropolis where you

dwell, as also in Scotland, Ireland, and other such places, no opium whatever is produced. Since it is not permitted

to do harm to your own country, then even less should you let it be passed on to the harm of other countries - how

much less to China!
