In the short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe, an unnamed narrator arrives to the house of Roderick Usher.

But she is actually Catatonic, a condition where a person seems to be dead, but is not. In the past even doctors were confused but the condition and declared a lot of people dead without being really dead, but catatonic.
