To start, anyone who is of the legal voting age can participate in the election. Also, some non-US residents voters can in some cases vote depending on their circumstances. Even when in some cases a person can lose their voting rights if they are mentally incompetent or in some states if they have committed a felony. Those who want to vote can vote for any candidate that they feel will be best for the job. In addition, voters have the ability to attend events in which they can have their questions answered by the nominee or a representative.
