Likewise, both economies were strong and based mainly on ocean trade in which silk was the largest export, this was thanks to the Grand Canal (built during the Tang Dynasty) which was the world’s longest canal at the time and linked China to the West and encouraged north-south trade within China. Furthermore, during this era, numerous inventions emerged such as the magnetic compass for sailing, paper money, porcelain, the mechanical clock and gunpowder, and the technology and science advanced to the point that China became the most advanced in the world during this era.
